RDHS were approached by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to provide health and safety consultancy and management for the Summer of World Athletics.
Starting in February 2017, we developed a Health and Safety Strategy, which included a thorough review of the processes and procedures in place within the LOC, identifying how a Health and Safety Management System could be integrated into the planning and delivery of both Championships and how the health and safety function would be shaped and delivered overall.
Following the development of the strategy, RDHS were awarded the contract to deliver the health and safety consultancy services. We were embedded into the main structure of the LOC and were tasked to deliver health and safety at the largest event in the world this year. No small task!!
With a short time frame to realise this, a work plan was created to ensure completion of all actions across all levels including:
- Development of safety policies, processes & plans, with subsequent communication & assurance of compliance
- Compilation of all necessary safety training processes for workforce, volunteers & contractors, including Inductions, First Aid and ongoing Tool Box Talks
- Advice and support to all Functional Area Leads on safety integration and planning
- Management of contractors by undertaking safety evaluations and review of Risk Assessments and Method Statements
- Implementation of all duties in accordance with Construction Design Management Regulations (2015) across all areas of temporary builds.
This planning translated to provision of assurance during the build, operational and bump out phases, with the deployment of a team of Advisors on sites at London Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, ExCel Exhibition Centre and city-wide locations such as International Federation Congress activities, training venues, hotels, transport hubs, Marathon and Race Walks.
The project was delivered with overall success, with some notable achievements along the way!
These included:
- Inducting 2500 staff and contractors through an online portal
- Safe installation and management of all build areas
- Work of the RDHS Safety Team to deliver the ‘Hero’ Mascot Zipline project
All of this work, culminated in what was a hugely successful spectator and broadcasting experience across the world. This was the biggest and best event the world has seen or will see in 2017, and RDHS were right at the heart of it.
